Mansions, Mimosas, & Milk Punch – Oh My!

Mansions, Mimosas, & Milk Punch – Oh My!

One of the most fascinating ports we visit on our cruises along the Lower Mississippi River is Natchez, a city steeped in history as one of the oldest continuous settlements along the river. Perched gracefully atop the bluffs of the Mississippi, Natchez beckons with its array of magnificent estates and enthralling tales from bygone eras.

A highlight of our visit to Natchez is our Legends & Libations excursion. On this unique and unforgettable experience, led by a local guide, guests can learn about the history and culture of Natchez, admire the architecture and design of two historic mansions, and taste some of the most iconic cocktails of the region.

Our first destination is the illustrious Dunleith, a majestic estate built in 1856. Upon arrival, be welcomed by the delightful flavors of hibiscus mimosas, a refreshing concoction blending freshly squeezed orange juice, champagne, and house-crafted hibiscus syrup.

While sipping, learn about Natchez’s history while admiring the splendor around you.

Renowned for its striking Greek Revival architecture, characterized by imposing white columns, intricate ironwork, and a stately portico, this mansion is a testament to the opulence of its era.

Dunleith’s narrative spans diverse chapters, from serving as a private residence to housing Confederate headquarters during the Civil War and later evolving into a prestigious girls’ school. In the early 20th century, it underwent a transformation into a luxurious hotel. Today, as Dunleith Historic Inn, it is a popular bed and breakfast, inviting guests to step back in time and experience the refined lifestyle of the South in the early 19th century. With its meticulously preserved interiors, expansive grounds, and timeless allure, Dunleith continues to enchant history aficionados and visitors alike.

Next, visit Linden, one of the oldest homes in Natchez. Built in 1790, it is an excellent example of Federal-style architecture, characterized by its symmetrical facade, graceful proportions, and delicate detailing. Over the years, Linden underwent several renovations and additions, including the addition of Greek Revival elements in the mid-19th century.
Throughout its history, Linden has hosted various notable figures, including Andrew Jackson, who reportedly stayed at the mansion during his visits to Natchez. Presently a private dwelling, Linden graciously opens its doors to guests of American Cruise Lines, offering a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of the South and the architectural grandeur of early American design.
As you explore this early suburban villa, try a classic southern cocktail, milk punch. Dating back to the 18th century, this libation is made with brandy, milk, sugar, and nutmeg, epitomizing the essence of southern hospitality.
