DAY UNDER FULL SAILS
One of the most thrilling parts of a SEA CLOUD voyage is also one of the most sustainable: the release of the sails by hand for the joy of pure seafaring. The sailors scale 190 feet into the shrouds, release the heavy cloth, then vigorously tighten the ropes down on deck. There are no buttons to automate this time-honored tradition. It takes almost an hour until all sails catch, using full wind power for up to 50 percent of any given sailing.

Horta’s marina walls stand as the world’s most colorful maritime masterpiece, and the port is a hub of activity. Don’t miss a sailor’s toast at Peter Café Sport, world-famous with transatlantic yacht crews since 1918. The blue island is a hydrangea-framed volcanic cone, where you’ll hike the lunar landscape of Capelinhos.
PRAIA DA GRACIOSA PRAIA DA VITORIA VELAS
Windmills, lava caves, and off-road jeep adventures await. Explore volcanic craters, mist-covered forests, and a UNESCO World Heritage town steeped in maritime history. Take a landscape tour across the island of colorful chapels on Terceira. And on São Jorge, several picturesque fajãs are home to small family coffee plantations, where locals serve the island’s treasure close to the shoreline.
PONTA DELGADA OVERNIGHT
With a full day and overnight in the lively capital of São Miguel, you’ll have time to see its green side by jeep, sip tea at historic plantations, and circle Lake Fogo. Enter through the trefoil-shaped city gate and pause on mosaic cobblestones. By day, gaze over Sete Cidades’ emerald and sapphire crater lakes. By night, bask in Atlantic breezes on café-lined squares.
